Tangled animators had to create CG animations that mimicked traditional Disney character designs, while still allowing characters to move in a way that was organic and realistic. Key to this effort was the development of a new way to control Rapunzel’s hair. Animation Supervisor Glen Keane pushed animators to create new methods of working with CG that would help raise standards for 3D CG.

One example of the subdued action in Tangled is the moment when Rapunzel and Flynn prepare to release lanterns into the night sky. In this scene, Rapunzel holds the same pose for almost two seconds. The only movement in her eyes is a slight flex (like a small twitch on the orbicularis eyelid). This was a powerful moment for Rapunzel and it underscores that she has agency over her own life.

Other moments of agency can be found throughout the film and they show a young girl’s ability to grow a backbone and fight for herself. Rapunzel, for example, is able to fight for herself in the battle with Mother Gothel. This is not something that most women can do easily, and it’s incredible to see in a movie.
