In Cam, Daniel Goldhaber’s new film, set in the world cam modeling, Phattony1587 is a regular client of sites like Chaturbate or ManyVids. He watches his favorite models perform live on-camera and then types to them via chat rooms. The scenes shot in the real world are rendered in subdued colors, while those filmed in the camming realm, a fantasy of coy sexual playtime, are in more vivid reds and purples and shot from more overtly theatrical angles. The two styles bleed together at times, suggesting the internal warm-up that goes into this work or how glamour and reality blur.

Jennifer Ringley, a pioneer of the billion-dollar industry, connected a webcam on her laptop in 1996 and began broadcasting a mundane everyday life to her site Jennicam. During her snapshot moments, Ringley watched the internet, studied, ate, masturbated, or did whatever else she wanted in the moment, and viewers were mesmerized.

There are many websites that cater to this niche. Each has its own logo, specialties and subscriber models. These women (and some men) make a living by entertaining people over the internet who pay to chat with them in private shows. They create and deliver a (feigned sense of) pleasure and desire to audiences, joke with clients, develop personal knowledge and interest, and provide information.
